Orthodox Women of Britain

We are formed with the blessing of His Grace, Bishop Maximos of Melitene, and are open to all Orthodox Women of any canonical Orthodox jurisdiction.

Patron saints: Nonna, Hilda and Olympias

Our vision:
We are Orthodox Christian women dedicated to supporting one another in our service to God (diakonia), and to exploring and celebrating all the avenues of women’s service, past and present.
Values:
Mutual support in building Orthodox Christian community.

Purpose:
1. To study and affirm the vocation of Orthodox women in home, church and monastic life.
2. By establishing a study and support group for women to deepen their understanding of their vocation as women and the contribution they make to the Orthodox community in all walks of life.
3. Studies will be focussed on women’s roles, e.g. young orthodox women, the woman in family and home, presbytera and choir roles, orthodox women’s contribution to catechesis and orthodox formation in academia, and fostering monastic vocation among women in the UK.

Quarterly sessions at Birmingham (affiliated with Thyatiera Midland Ecclesiastical Seminary and open to men and women)
Occasional day retreats – women only

Final disclaimer:
We are not a feminist pressure group.
We maintain the traditions of the Orthodox Church in the context of the present debate about the role of women’s diaconate and do not agree with the false hermeneutical premise (made by the Anglican communion) which links women’s diaconate to priesthood. We embrace the difference between male and female roles in the church as fundamental to the fulfilment of womanhood, as a sign of the marriage of Christ and his Church (Ephesian 5:27; Rev. 19:6-9 ff.)
