On Saturday, 9th August 2025 at 10am, the Thyateira Midland Ecclesiastical Seminary (TMES) welcomed twenty-five attendees and five lecturers for a special day dedicated to exploring the heart of Christian ministry. This inspiring event, titled “The Call to Service – Ministry in the Church”, was led by Protopresbyter Stephen Maxfield (Rector of the Seminary).
An Engaging Exchange of Ideas
In the morning, following the Rector’s introduction and an overview of the Seminary, the tutor panel engaged with a diverse array of questions from the attendees. These inquiries spanned from the practical aspects of nurturing children in the faith to more profound theological reflections. The discussion fostered thoughtful dialogue, providing participants with a clearer understanding of our varied ministries as Orthodox Christians.
A Unique Opportunity for Aspiring Leaders
For those who have felt a gentle calling towards a life of service, ministry, or deeper involvement in the Church, the day provided a unique opportunity for clarity and encouragement. TMES designed the event to inspire and equip future leaders. Attendees not only had the privilege of hearing His Grace Bishop Maximos share his wisdom and experience on the true essence of all-person ministry in the Church, but also had the chance to meet the lecturers and some of the students of the seminary. The bishop’s address was rich with insight, weaving together theology and practical wisdom. His words encouraged all present to reflect on their own place within the mission of the Church.
Nourishment for Body and Soul
Midway through the day, guests enjoyed a delicious and varied fasting buffet lunch, offering a welcome moment for fellowship and conversation. The menu, carefully prepared to accommodate the Dormition Fast, featured a colourful range of dishes that satisfied every palate.
Exploring the British Saints Synaxarion Project
After lunch, Sister Theovouli delivered a fascinating presentation on the British Saints Synaxarion project. This important research initiative aims to gather historical information and hagiographies of British saints from before 1066, preserving their stories and spiritual heritage for future generations. The project is part of the significant and ongoing research work undertaken by TMES, highlighting the seminary’s role not only in theological education but also in safeguarding the Christian history of the British Isles.
A Step Toward Your Calling
The call to ministry is both a personal and communal journey. For those who attended, this was more than just a seminar—it was a day of connection, reflection, learning, and renewed commitment to serving God’s people.
